Nourish Granola - Last Minute DIY Gift for Mom
Time. It's one of those things that can seriously duck a girl up. Last sentence was auto-corrected. Moving on. The older I get the faster time seems to go and the harder it is to slow down. Whether this is true for this audience or not the point of this rambling is that it's Saturday and Mother's Day is tomorrow.
If any of you are like me, I am freaking out a bit. Not because we can't send our moms some flowers or go shopping for a gift last minute, but gosh-darn-it, Mom deserves a great gift straight from the heart, made by the hands of her precious little one. Good thing the F&K ladies are pretty handy when it comes to last minute ideas and came up with this amazing gift for Mom that has all the things she loves: healthy(ish) snacks, flowers, all-things-handmade-by-you, and a sprinkle of love; and all the things YOU love in a DIY gift: easy, and very little time.
Introducing: Nourish Granola, inspired by our Nourish Facial Exfoliant and Mask recipe that takes flowers for Mother's Day to a whole new level. A tasty level.
You'll need to gather these tools to make it:
-a mixing bowl
-wooden spoon
-baking sheet
-a super adorable container for the end product
-tags, stamps, stickers, etc. (optional, but highly recommended)
NOURISH GRANOLA
(makes 8 servings)
-2 C gluten-free organic rolled oats
-1/4 C lightly chopped walnuts
-1/4 C raisins
-1/8 C dried rose petals
-a small handful of caramel and chocolate chips (optional)
-3 Tbsp organic honey
-2 Tbsp coconut oil (set 2 tsp aside)
Steps
1. Set the oven to 275* F.
2. Gather your ingredients and add all ingredients (except for the caramel and chocolate chips, rose petals, and 2 tsp coconut oil) into a large mixing bowl.
3. Spread the mixture evenly onto a baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
4. While the mixture is baking, spend the next few minutes customizing your container. Decorate Mom's gift with an awesome label she'd appreciate, or a handwritten note, or heck, just stick a picture of you and Mom on it and she'll freaking love it. Make it special, I mean... it's Mom for goodness sakes. The lady bore you from her tiny lady business, so let's make it a little fun for her. She deserves it. ;)
5. 5-7 minutes before the granola is done baking, mix the dried rose petals and remaining coconut oil (and if you feel like it, 2 tsp honey) and add to the batch of granola. Mix it into the batch and cook for the remaining 5-7 minutes.
5. Time's up! Take the finished granola out of the oven, add the optional caramel and chocolate chips and a few extra unbaked dried rose petals for visual appeal, and use a wooden spoon to mix around the finished granola, getting all edges and making sure no granola is stuck to the bottom of the baking sheet. Leave the granola on the baking sheet until all is cool, then pack it up! This step is important, don't rush it. The granola needs to cool completely to have that crisp crunch, otherwise, say hello to soft granola. Yuck.
There you have it! In less than half an hour, you've got something truly special for your mama to enjoy. Granola is one of the easiest gifts to make that is beyond customizable. Add anything yummy you've got laying around the house like dried fruits, candies, cookies, add spices like cinnamon and nutmeg to it if you wish, but knowing my mama, she likes things a little simple and not so sweet.
Now, that wasn't so bad was it? I know I can't control the speed of time, but I can (try to) control 30 minutes of my life for Mama.
Happy Mother's Day, Mom(s)!! Love you!
